Marit Roland (b. 1981 Kristiansand, NO) works with paper sculptures/installations which she calls Paper Drawings.
This is an extension of her previous classical drawing practice as well as a displacement of the paper in the act of drawing. The installations have a three-dimensional form, are often site-specific, appear as sculptures, and yet she still claims that they are drawings. She describes her practice as drawing with the paper instead of on it. Roland took her Master degree at NTNU, Trondheim Academy of Fine Art Norway in 2012. That same year she was awarded Sparebanken Pluss and Sørlandets Kunstmuseums Kunstnerpris based on her work with drawing in the extended field.
After graduating, shes had solo shows at Kristiansand Kunsthall, Tromsø Kunstforening, Galleri Maria Veie, Prosjektrom Normanns and Museo D`Arte Contemporanea Villa Croce, Genova Italy. In 2013 – 2015 she also exhibited at The Norwegian Sculpture Biennale Vigelandsmuseet, Sørlandsutstillingen, Østlandsutstillingen, Høstutstillingen, Sørlandets Kunstmuseum and at the New York Art Book Fair, MoMa PS 1.
Roland has also been lecturing and tutoring at amongst other NTNU Department of Architectural Design, form and color: Drawing as a tool for visualizing and creative thinking. And at the University of Agder, Art department, in the field of site specific art. She is currently involved with The National Museum of Art, Architecture, department of Touring Exhibitions as Educational Curator.
